Current state of the Profession

Colon Hydrotherapy has enjoyed a stable state since 2009 when WAACH members, Department of Health policy leaders, and Representative Tami Green developed resolutions to ensure safe practice standards for colon hydrotherapy practitioners in WA State.

Currently, there is another round of disciplinary activity whereby several practitioners across the state are under investigation for “practicing medicine without a license.” DOH (Department of Health) authorities have not acknowledged or honored the resolution process set in place in 2009 and have continued with serious disciplinary action, including threats to cease and desist, exorbident fines, and suspension of other health care licenses (such as massage therapy licensure).

WAACH members have immediately taken action to advocate for industry professionals. Our goal is to pass a bill into law that protects the current professionals providing colon hydrotherapy and ensures access to the therapy for WA state citizens. The success we have had in this campaign has been astounding! Against all odds, we have gained sponsorship for our bill through several key legislators, made it through 3 committees and the House floor with unanimous support from the legislators and are now only one committee and the Senate floor voting away from getting our bill to the Governor’s desk to sign into law! This last email and phone calling campaign [starting Feb 24 and completing no later than Mar 11] is the last help we should need from all of you. If we are lucky enough to get to the Senate floor within a day or 2 then we will need everyone to send emails and make phone calls immediately to have an impact.

IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU ARE TIMELY IN YOUR ACTIONS. Don’t think tomorrow is okay, take action today!

We are targeting to get HB2775 to the floor of the Senate for all 49 Senators to vote on it. If it passes, then it goes to the Governor, where we will be signed into a law that protects our future.

We need all of you to reach out to all 49 Senators immediately in case we move to the floor unexpectedly fast. It will be important for all of you to encourage everyone you know to reach out to all of the Senators by email and to call their district Senator [click here for phone numbers] right now! Time is of the essence.

We are making this as easy as possible for you to reach out to all 49 WA State Senators by providing guidance for you to send out only 1 email!!!

I can’t speak regarding anything other than Gmail, at this point. Gmail lets you send up to 500 emails per day, whether it is 1 email to 500 people or 500 emails to 1 person each or anything in between. This email will only be going to 49 people so you are likely well within appropriate limits.

#1. Start a new email and title it something like…

“Please support HB 2775: regarding Colon Hydrotherapy”.

#2. Write the body of your email and craft it using the following:

Dear Senator,

I am writing to request that you support HB 2775, a bill that addresses colon hydrotherapy. This bill has passed through every committee and the House floor unanimously.

For background, here is the link to the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapist, where you will find a collection of resources regarding colon hydrotherapy; the practice, its benefits, and studies performed. Colon hydrotherapy is a popular wellness service utilized by citizens throughout WA State for bowel management in a variety of circumstances. It has enjoyed an impressive safety record or a number of years.

We are bringing the bill, HB 2775, because this year the Department of Health has determined it needs to begin enforcement of a 2008 court case where the Department of Health determined that colon hydrotherapy was a practice of medicine. The colon hydrotherapists brought the issue to the attention of Rep. Nicole Macri and Rep. Cody last year.

I support this bill and believe this legislation is needed to protect the numerous small business owners who provide this form of alternative health care. Without passage of this bill, many of us will lose our chosen livelihood.
